OBJECTIVES
Change the perception of condoms especially in conuntries where it is
still not well accepted.
Display them in attractive packs, reproducing both messages from famous
personalities and artworks created for "Artists4life"
project."
ACTION
In Africa, condom still has a negative connotation. For most men, using
a condom can be seen as a lack of virility, and raise suspicion regarding
their status. Many women are too afraid of asking their partner to use
a condom, even when they know that they are positive themselves or if
they have good reasons to suspect their partner to be positive.
Stigma remains a strong barrier to safer sex and condom use.
Distributing condoms carrying messages from personalities from various
background who have the respect or admiration of these men and women can
help change the gesture and vision of condom.

PRINCIPLE
In South Africa and Swaziland, condoms are already available in anonimous
white boxes. South African government came with a "Choice" branding
garantying quality.
But they remain condoms that you take from a box and bring back home,
in front of your nightbor, or shopkeeper, with a judgment attach to this
gesture.
In 2005, 20 000 condoms have been donated by French stylist Agnes b. to
Dessine l'Espoir, packed in a very attractive individual box carrying
the campaign message "I Love You Positive or Negative. Designing
Hope distributed them in Swaziland and South Africa and could see the
impact of an attractive packaging on the distribution.
DESCRIPTION
Original packaging can change the gesture of taking a condom in a public
place. Anyone can pretend he takes one to see or collect nice boxes, rather
than taking a couple of condoms home...
> CONDOM PACKS
A first edition of 8 different condom packs have been designed, associating
a message to a visual:
(Click on each one bellow to enlarge them)

100 000 condom packs have already been printed, and condoms supply is
beeing organized from a South African factory (respecting government quality
expectancies) on the one hand, and from Swazi government on the other
hand. Once this activity will be organised, the second step will be to
organize the packing and distribution of 1 million condoms, and reach
from then a long run activity for these support groups, also feeding the
campaign with awareness tools, to be distributed for free.
> DISPLAY BOXES
Designing Hope came with the concept of boxes of 100 condoms indvidually
packed.
Boxes in cardboard are printed in 4 colors, carrying illustrations of
the campaign.
They have an opening at the bottom so people can take condom 2 by 2.
> PACKAGES
These boxes will be delivered to selected diffusion channels ( hospitals,
schools, administrative offices, community halls... ) A specific approach
will also be developped for companies, (especially benefiting members
of the consortium) together with posters
and flyers.
These packages can be sent regularly , in order to maintain a long run
presence of the campaign and tools.
It includes:
- 1 box of 100 condoms, covered with designs, messages and logos of the
campaign
- 1 A2 poster (5 different model epr language)
- 5 A3 posters (one of each available per language)
- 20 flyers (5 of each available per language)
AN INCOME GENERATING ACTIVITY
Rather than importing condoms pre-packed in Asia at cheaper cost, the
individual packing activity of the condoms has been considered as a potential
manual activity to be developped within support groups.
linked to counselling, art and food supply, it is a way to encourage adherance
to support groups,
and bring patients and their family nutritional support.
Designing Hope is preparing the set up of this new activity based on a
"give & take" concept:
Patients will be invited to take part to the condom packing program of
the "I Love You Positive or Negative Campaign", and will receive
parcels of food as a reward for attending their support groups and spending
some time packing condoms in their individual decorated case.
A conselling session on stigmas and discriminations related to HIV/AIDS,
explaining the campaign thanks to its pedagogical
kit will be organised by Designing Hope in each support group.
This activity will be organized in several support groups and communities.
Inyankezi (Orange Farm), Malebese (Soweto) and MSF (Kayelitscha) in South
Africa, Malanda Community Hall and Designing Hope' support group in Piggs
Peak, Swaziland, Macienne in Mozambique, have already confirmed their
interest in participating in this project.
BUDGET
The financing of this project and its development will depend on the private
sponsoring and especially Designing Hope consortium
of sponsor companies invited to support and benefit from the campaign.
It includes:
