OBJECTIVES
- Distribution of meals for positive patients in Hospotal, and food parcels
distribution in several support groups in Swaziland, South Africa, and
Mozambique.
- Encourage testing and adherance to support groups for HIV+ people in
Swaziland, South Africa and Mozambique.
DESCRIPTION
At the hospital :
For HIV Testing Centres in hospitals and for the consellors supporting
psychologically people under ARV treatments, observance and regularity
of visits is a major issue. Designing Hope has been running since 2004
a meal distribution program for patients visiting the ARV section at Piggs
Peak hospital, Swaziland. This program encourages testing and regularity
of visits for people spending hours in transport and waiting to see a
doctor. For many of them, it is the only balance meal of the month.
Number of patients increased drasticaly from 200 to 2000 persons between
July 2004 and September 2006. In response to this growing number of people
coming to the VCT Centre, Designing Hope wish to extend this program from
2 to 5 days of food distribution per week.
In support groups :
Manual activity is linked to counselling, art and food supply
in order to encourage adherance to support groups, and bring patients
and their family nutritional support.
In several support groups of HIV+ people in Swaziland, South Africa and
Mozambique, Designing Hope is setting up a new activity based on a simple
"give & take" concept, with great potential to strenghten
observance to support groups.
Patients will be invited to take part to the condom
packing program of the "I Love You Positive or Negative Campaign",
and will receive parcels of food as a reward for attending their support
groups and spending some time packing condoms in their individual case
decorated by artists and carrying the campaign message.
A conselling session on stigmas and discriminations related to HIV/AIDS,
explaining the campaign thanks to its pedagogical
kit will be organised by Designing Hope in each support group.
This activity will be organized in several support groups and communities:
Inyankezi (Orange Farm), Malebese (Soweto) and MSF (Kayelitscha) in South
Africa, Malanda Community Hall and Designing Hope' support group in Piggs
Peak, Swaziland, Macienne in Mozambique, have already confirmed their
interest in participating in this project.
100 000 condom packs have already been printed, and condoms supply is
being organized from a South African factory (respecting government quality
expectancies) on the one hand, and from Swazi government on the other
hand.
Once this activity will be organised, the second step will be to organize
the packing and distribution of 1 000 000 condoms, and reach from then
a long run activity for these support groups, also feeding the campaign
with awareness tools, to be distributed for free.
